Parents can go wild decorating a dinosaur theme bedroom for their child without setting aside a Jurassic sized budget.

A dinosaur theme bedroom is a popular selection for boys. Colorful dinosaurs tromping through tropical foliage can stimulate a young child’s curiosity. The allure of archeological digs, paleontology, dino bones and ferocious T-Rexes often appeal to the older crew.

Start with the Walls for the Dinosaur Theme Bedroom or Nursery

There are so many directions parents can take when decorating a child’s bedroom or nursery in a dinosaur theme. Wallpaper options abound.

Parents might also opt for the more affordable coat of paint. Color choices can range from sand colored tans to suit the budding paleontologists to a vibrant green for jungle foliage. With so many options, parents may want to choose bedding and accent pieces first to aid in the decision.

Once the walls are covered, parents can add a dinosaur theme wallpaper border or try their hand at dino stencils. If they went with the sandy yellows or browns of a dig site, they can use craft paint to add enormous dino bones protruding from the sand. If they opted for the jungle look, they can use different shades of green to add large palm fronds and other prehistoric looking plants. Artistic parents can use the craft paint to add a towering T-Rex, soaring pterodactyl, gentle brontosaurus, armored triceratops, or menacing raptor amidst the Jurassic foliage. Peel and stick wall decals or wallpaper murals are an equally attractive option.

If parents want to leave the walls a solid green, they can add some depth by hanging silk jungle vines from sticky hooks near the ceiling.

To dress up the walls of a dig site, parents can make papier maché dino bones for the wall.

To make papier maché dino bones:

  1. Ball up four large wads of news paper and wrap with masking tape.
  2. Secure two of these balls to each end of a long cardboard tube.
  3. Mix an equal portion of glue and water to create a paste.
  4. Tear strips of newspaper and dip into the paste.
  5. Use the pasty strips to cover the newspaper balls and cardboard.
  6. Allow the bones to dry overnight and paint white.
  7. Use fishing line and sticky hooks to hang the bones on the bedroom wall.

Older kids might also like to choose prints or posters of their favorite Dinosaurs to liven up the bedroom walls.

Bed Sets Crib Sets, Window Treatments, and Area Rugs, for the Dinosaur Nursery or Bedroom

Parents can either choose a generic dinosaur bed set, or go with the well-known characters from Land before Time or Flintstones. Co-ordinating curtains often accompany bed sets or crib sets, but do-it-yourself decorators might rather find some dino print fabric and create their own window treatments and matching throw pillows.

A bedroom with a hardwood floor will need an area rug. Parents can find an affordable tan carpet and use fabric paint to add dino shaped footprint tracks.

Decorating a Dinosaur Theme Nursery or Bedroom

Parents should first take stock of the toy box to see what dinos will help with their decor. Dressers, night stands, and bookshelves are all great places to display a molded plastic dinosaur collection. Stuffed animal dinosaurs will look great on the rocking chair or bed.

Greenery is an excellent accent for a dinosaur bedroom. Just about any tropical plant will suit the decor. Older kids may enjoy learning to care for a potted aloe, palm, or another leafy plant with a prehistoric jungle look. Potted silk plants are an alternative for younger kids.

Shelves are a great place to decorate with dinosaur skeleton models, plastic dinosaurs, an archeologist’s hat, and books. Parents can choose non-fiction reference books on dinosaurs or storybooks whose covers depict dinos and set them covers facing outward. Some great titles include Dinosaur! by Peter Sis, Dinosaurs by Byron Barton, Dinosaurs Forever by William Wise, The Most Amazing Dinosaur by James Stevenson, and Patrick's Dinosaurs by Carol Carrick. Decorating with books is an inexpensive way they can instill a love of reading early.

Parents can personalize the room by constructing a set of dinosaur skeleton models with their child. After that educational project, they might want to help their child snap and frame a collage of pictures from a family trip to the museum. They can also scope out a bunch of illustrated dinosaur books from the used book store and clip favorite photos with their child. The pictures can be used to decoupage accent pieces for the room such as pencil cans, plaques for the wall, a table and chairs, or nightstand. Touches like these make a dino theme room feel special and fill it with happy memories.

Kids are sure to dig their new dinosaur theme room. For more tips and ideas, parents can check out articles on ocean, jungle, fireman, and construction themes.
